Hiking into the volcanic mountains in search of the world’s only remaining mountain gorillas is undoubtedly an extraordinary experience.

Setting out from Kigali, you’ll drive the two-and-a-half hours north, climbing into the highlands as you head to your accommodation for the night near Volcanoes National Park HQ. There is a chance to canoe the Mukungwa River and explore the Musanze town on foot or if you are adventurous you can start very early to join a group to hike the Bisoke Volcano.

The next morning you’ll be assigned an experienced team of trackers and guides to walk into the Virungas to find one of the gorilla families inhabiting the reserve’s Rwandan side.

Upon your return, you’ll have a chance to share your experience over lunch at a mountain lodge or our favorite town restaurant before returning to Kigali.

Kigali to Musanze
Drive into the hills of northern Rwanda, heading for the border village of Kinigi. On a clear day, the views across the valleys toward the distant volcanoes are spectacular. On the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park, you’ll stop to canoe the Mukungwa River. Pass through the town of Musanze on your way to the lodge. We recommend an early night before your trek tomorrow.

Gorillas
After breakfast you’ll make the short transfer to the Park HQ. You'll be assigned one of the 12 gorilla families living on the Rwandan side of the reserve. With an experienced team of trackers and guides, hike into the forest to track some of the world's only mountain gorillas. The hike may be anything from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorilla's location; remember, you are tracking wild animals.
