The only rolling savannah habitat in Rwanda, Akagera National Park is a short drive to the east of the country where it borders Tanzania.

Having taken in the highlights of the capital, head out in search of hippos in the southern wetlands of Lake Ihema. A full day’s game drive is a chance to spot the Big Five, herds of antelope, giraffes and spectacular birdlife.

After a second night in the reserve, it’s time to drive north through the Park in search of the big cats, which are drawn to the game on the vast, open grasslands located in the Northern plains. We’ll return to Kigali by sunset or head directly to the airport for those flying out.

Kigali to Akagera
Start with the unmissable sites of Kigali then drive east to Akagera National Park, enjoying a late afternoon sunset boat across Lake Ihema.
A dawn drive to spot rhino and elephants in the southern reaches of the park, lunch at ‘Lake Mihindi’ and Karenge Bush Camp for dinner and a restful night.
Lions in Akagera National Park by Jean Marie
