Where to Go Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda, Uganda & the DRC
Rare, endangered mountain gorillas live only in the protected forests of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. With just 1,063 individuals recorded in the latest census, every encounter feels incredibly special. The vulnerability of their habitat and the dedication needed to safeguard them make gorilla tracking one of Africa’s most meaningful wildlife adventures. Most travellers begin their journey via Kigali International Airport, the easiest access point for the region.
- Rwanda – Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is one of the most iconic places to see mountain gorillas. Treks here are raw and adventurous, unfolding among volcanic peaks and lush montane forests, though travellers should remain aware of the security situation and plan accordingly. With several habituated mountain gorilla families and strong conservation efforts, Virunga offers some of the most intimate and uncrowded gorilla encounters in Africa. When to Visit & Permit Costs

The shoulder seasons (March, May, October, November) have fewer crowds for a more intimate experience and trails are at their muddiest in April, making trekking the most challenging as it is the height of the rainy season.
Gorilla tracking permits are strictly limited to protect the gorillas and their fragile habitats, and prices vary by country:

- Rwanda: $1,500 per person (with low‑season discounts for African residents)
- Democratic Republic of Congo: $400 per person in Virunga National Park (subject to change depending on park operations and security conditions)

The Journey to Meet the Gorillas
Your day begins early with breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a 7:00am briefing. Groups are assigned based on fitness and experience, ensuring everyone follows a route suited to their ability.
Once on the trail, the forest surrounds you with towering trees, thick vegetation, and the sounds of birds and primates creating an atmosphere that feels ancient and alive. Depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight, your trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, as you travel through the forest in pursuit.
Visits are strictly regulated: groups of up to eight people spend one hour with a gorilla family to minimise disturbance and support conservation. Standing meters from a silverback or watching young gorillas play is extraordinary, revealing their quiet strength and deep social bonds. It’s humbling to remember that humans share over 98% of our DNA with these remarkable primates.
