Spend a few days exploring the crown jewel of Ethiopia’s historic north: the famous medieval rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.
Dubbed Ethiopia’s ‘New Jerusalem’, Lalibela is a magical place, steeped in history, natural beauty and culture. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, 11 monolithic churches were carved from the rock during the 12th Century. With the exception of the eleventh, Biete Ghiorgis, the churches sit on both banks of the Jordan River.
Pilgrims and worshippers still journey to Lalibela today, especially during feasts in the Ethiopian Christian calendar. As we slowly uncover each church, there’s time to appreciate their extraordinary beauty and craftsmanship and make sense of their vast cultural significance.
