Visiting Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and the only savannah grassland in Rwanda is a fantastic chance to see wild game and birdlife.

The National Park is home to the Big Five, as well as giraffe, baboon, zebra and antelope, while the southern Lake Ihema is an ideal habitat for hippos and crocodiles. Among the 500 birds living here, you might find the rare shoebill stork, red-faced barbet and papyrus gonolek.

Akagera is a working example of sustainable and responsible tourism. From its poor state in the early 1990s, the National Park is now a conservation success story that ensures local employment and benefits Rwanda as a whole. Most recently the park has successfully reintroduced lions and rhinos, helping to bring the local ecosystem into greater balance.
